Grandma and Grandpa Christiansen

With whom did you go on your first date and where did you go?

My first date was with Scott, a boy I knew from church, and we attempted to go on a hayride but there was a problem he got the time wrong so we never connected with the party but ended up going to the movies with his parents (he was too young to drive). Did not go on another date for almost two years because President McKay came out shortly after that and said we should not date until we were sixteen.

Describe your first job

After spending 10 hours (including travel time between Nampa and Weiser) picking strawberries and only earning 75 cents I jumped at the chance to babysit a two year old and a five year old for the rest of the summer. Their mom was a nurse who worked the 3-11 shift and their dad was a carpenter and cabinet maker so she would drop them off at our house on her way to the hospital and I would entertain for the rest of the afternoon and early evening until their dad picked them up. It was a great way to earn money for school items and some new clothes.  -Grandma C

My first job was when I was 9 years old and I had a paper route which was 5 miles long and consisted of delivering 40 papers. I had a paper route well into my teens. I also had a job starting when I was about 14 in a local retail store named "Babytown" I assembled baby furniture for customers and did janitorial work in the store.
My dad wanted to keep me busy so he "loaned" me out to one of the neighbors to make concrete blocks to be used in a retaining wall. Dad made a form for me and I mixed concrete and filled the forms over and over. Produced enough concrete blocks to build a retaining wall of two levels which was approximately 50 feet long. The wall still stands today some 60 years later

Who's the oldest relative you remember (and what do you remember about him or her)?

Great grand uncle Elmer Eggers who lived to be 96 years old. He had a beautiful cream and salmon Packard car that he kept parked in his barn. He rarely drove it but when we were visiting him in Nebraska he gave us a ride (he would have been almost eighty then). He had white hair, was fairly tall, and was quite nice to us kids. -Grandma C

I remember my Great Grandfather John Jacob Jordan on my mother's side. When I met him I was about 5 years old and he was about 85 and blind. He took measure of me by placing his hands on my head and felt my face. He still lived on the family homestead in Russel Springs, Kansas. I spent the summer there and he died several years later.
On my father's side the oldest relatives I knew was my Grandfather and Grandmother who both immigrated to the United States in 1903-4 time frame. All relatives prior to then were born, lived and died in Denmark. My dad and grandfather were in business together. They owned a Cabinet and Remodeling shop, and occasionally built custom homes. Both grandma and Grandpa returned to Denmark for a visit in 1955. -Grandpa C

What were your favorite subjects in school? Please explain why.

Math -  it is logical - it is either correct or incorrect
Zoology - have always been fascinated with animals
Reading - love books, especially the classics, historical novels, and biographies
-Grandma C

Math and PE, Math because I always had an interest in technical things and liked to do math. PE from the stand point it got me outside and in a competitive mode. Besides that my capabilities attracted the girls....- Grandpa C

What is your oldest memory?

When I was 3 or 4 I can remember Grandma Fairchild wrapping my thumb with tape before she would put me in the crib for a nap and I would try my hardest to get it off so I could suck my thumb.
-Grandma C

One of my oldest memories is one with my Grandmother Teague. As her grandchildren reached a certain age she would take them back to the old homestead in Russell Springs, Kansas to spend the summer on the farm upon which she grew up and which was still in the family. There I met my great grand father John Jacob Jordan who was blind by then and he got to know me by placing his hands on my head and feeling my face. It was a short time after that that he passed away. But I have never forgotten the occasion.

The fishing at the farm pond was great also, we got to ride horses and shoot roman candles at each other on the 4th of July. We all had a blast....
